Google Tech TalksOctober 1, 2008ABSTRACTTo create enhanced user interfaces for retrieval and processing of audio and other media, we developed a range of techniques that leverage the human brain's enormous capabilities in visual and auditory perception and draw on computer graphics as well as automated acoustic content analysis and new applications of human-computer interface devices. Our aim is to put more fun into these tasks--for both casual and professional users--and to provoke serendipity.We demonstrate--among other examples--how to quickly search through large collections of sound effects by listening to several ones simultaneously, with the user being immersed in a spatial field of sounds. We show how to find music files with the help of procedurally generated icons that replace the standard file icons--a fleet-footed application of visual data mining for non-experts. Today, not only collections of media files can become overwhelming, but also collections of effect software can. Achieved depending on how you choose to play the game.Edit (25/9/08) - Getting tired of the 'what's the difference' and 'there is no difference' remarks regarding Endings 2 and 3. Anyone with eyes can see that they are visually identical, however (as stated in the video between 2 and 3) there is a difference in the tone of narration, 2 is angry while 3 is sad. Anyone who is not deaf or does not have broken speakers should be able to pick up on this, otherwise you're lost mate! Ok fine this is a small difference and the designers could have probably put in more effort to distinguish them more, but nevertheless they are still different endings in their own right because they have been achieved by playing Bioshock in a different way. If you get the sad ending then you probably killed a few little sisters out of curiosity I don't know, so the narrator is sad that you gave in to temptation. But if you get the angry voice ending you have probably rampaged your way through killing every little sister you came across with a big smile on your face as you debate which plasmid you'll get next, so the narrator is angry that you have been so selfish and greedy. this goes to show you exactly how hard these girls worked to get this video done. i knew that the last 30 seconds of the video would be a montage of all the combatants as they are either knocked unconscious, or squirm around in pain from their injuries, but i wasn't sure how much of it I would need, or how many shots. so, after each long day of shooting, i would save the last half hour to get an assortment of 'aftermath shots'. i had most of the girls writhing around, rather than unconscious because it's far more visually interesting to see someone squirming around or convulsing than laying still. However, i did have a few of the girls stay unconscious because when i had all of the girls in the room writhe around at once, it started to look a little silly. anyway, here is some of the unused shots, as well as some longer, raw footage of the shots i did wind up using. this is only about 4 minutes worth of what we shot unedited outtakes...
