We failed to meet our objectives but the British met or indeed even exceeded theirs, including the famous burning of several key buildings in Washington.You overstate our involvement in World War 1 and 2. We, the United States, in the War of 1812, attempted to take land from British North America (modern day Canada), and we failed. Britain set out to defend their territory, and succeeded. In addition Britain blockaded our ports, crippling our economy, and also managed to destroy much of Washington DC. So while the war may have technically ended without a victor, if any side came out on top, wouldnt be us.

The overriding reason for the Americans declaring war was because they felt Britain were pushing their weight around too much and saw an opportunity to take Candada. They failed in doing so.
