Necessary in mountain country, annoying to listen to on flatlands. I love trucks but flatland jakers are bad for publicity. ;-)

The most common type, the one u see in video is by the piston, all it does it open the exhaust valve about 10degrees BTDP(before top dead center) a cunt hair to let out the compressed air.
