Dec 5, 2008 - Here's my take: Add 40 years to each of them and it makes perfect sense - the son finally giving up on his senile father (and singing a song to say goodbye). Having both look 40 years younger than they really are shows the absurdity of the reversal of roles, as the kid has to show a maturity he doesn't feel he should possess while the father, the source of authority, is now only a shadow of himself.
