TJDOZIER1 Says:
May 3, 2008 - I think there has never been an aircraft carrier based multirole aircraft to equal the Hornet...except the Super Hornet. And I have been around Naval aviation for more than 50 years. But I love the A-6 and my all time favorite the F-4 Phantom II.
tasoscorsair Says:
May 4, 2008 - you think that the F-18 is better at aircombat than the F-14?
TJDOZIER1 Says:
May 4, 2008 - Short answer, I think the Tomcat is unmatched in the role of fleet based air combat aircraft. I think the Hornet is the superior "multi-role" aircraft. But in the end its the opinions of the fleet combat pilots that matters, whichever one completes the mission and brings the aircrew back to the boat, is the superior aircraft of the day.

May 5, 2008 - thats it man! its all in the pilot...the bad thing with the tomcat retirement is that the fleet has lost the phoenix missile...
TJDOZIER1 Says:
May 7, 2008 - The AMRAMM is a powerful shield plus escort screen defenses, plus ship based defenses are a pretty thick wall in todays Navy. I was on the USS Ronald Reagan last year and the ship board and airborne defenses, made me sleep quite well at night. The Phoenix Missile was retired in 2004 and the Tomcat in 2006.
