Oct 7, 2008 - My sister lives 3 houses away, it scared the poo out of her dog. She said if felt like someone picked up her house and slammed it back down. Shes lucky there isn't any damage to her house that she can tell, but there are pieces and parts of the exploded house strewn about everywhere.

Oct 7, 2008 - I just got back from camping down the road from this house. I felt my tent shake when it exploded. Amazing that the guy is still alive.

Oct 7, 2008 - the owner of the house is unfortunatly no longer with us, he passed on late Monday. The person evacuated in the video was a neighbor.
maof3kids Says:
Oct 7, 2008 - The owner was not in the home when it exploded. It was a vacation rental. The caretaker, Jay, was injured. He would be the person who passed away. I have not yet heard that he has passed, however, and I'm close to his girlfriends mom.

Oct 8, 2008 - I live in fort bragg and i saw it in rl. I was in school when it happened and we felt it a whole town over! It was sooo scary. The guy is in the hospital right now and has serious burn injuries. I might be able to tell one of the stories i heard but in a different comment.
MGAMariah Says:
Oct 8, 2008 - The home is a vacation home for some people. The neighbors smelled propane and called him to investigate. They said that he was smoking (not very smart around gas) and it caught on fire or something. Thats one of the stories my math teacher told me. I knew i heard a boom. But non one listened to me!

Oct 8, 2008 - I was studying quietly in my Fort Bragg apartment two miles from the explosion when it rocked my home. I thought someone had ran a car into the downstairs residence. Jeez! I suppose the lesson we can learn from this is that gas should be turned off if a house is left vacant for a long period of time. Perhaps major leaks should be investigated only by professionals. Super lucky that only person was injured in this freaky incident! Who would've thought a local house would become a bomb!

Oct 9, 2008 - His name is Jay and he IS NOT DEAD! He is in the hospital in Sacramento as of Wednesday evening. He is badly burned but is going to make it! His girlfriend needs prayers and compassion not BS from people that don't know what they're talking about! Hang in there Katie and don't let these loosers get you down.
maof3kids Says:
Oct 9, 2008 - I'm thinking he wasn't smoking. Just another rumor. Just like the rumor that it was a meth lab. Small town living at its finest. Nobody bothers to find out the facts, they just jump to conclusions.
MGAMariah Says:
Oct 9, 2008 - But it was an explosion and there must have been some kind of fire to light the gas. I just heard about it yesterday and am not so sure about the truth. When the man recovers, hopefully if he recovers, he will explain what really happened and it will be in the paper for a few weeks.
elund9 Says:
Oct 9, 2008 - It is possible that static electricity from simply opening a door or turning a doorknob ignited the explosion, the propane concentration in the air only has to be 2.1% to be EXTREMELY explosive. Or maybe dude flipped on a light switch...from what the local paper says, he just opened the door. That house was saturated with propane, and if neighbors smelled propane gas, the fire dept. or the gas company should have been notified, not the caretaker. Lessons learned! I'm glad dude is okay!
MGAMariah Says:
Oct 9, 2008 - He's not very okay though... Hes in the hospital with sereous burns and might not make it... I think i might go say hi!!! xD! Lol, i might but im not sure...
featherbirdlady Says:
Oct 9, 2008 - The owner of the home lives in another city. The CARETAKER, Mr. Sallinen, is alive and in UC DAVIS.
Mojokat Says:
Oct 10, 2008 - We were less than half mile away and the power of the explosion was so intense. It really freaked us out. All we could do was call the fire department since we had no idea where it originated.
