Apr 14, 2008 - You possibly have already done this, but I would strongly advise first watching one of Dr Jon Kabat-Zinns videos on youtube - he is an astonishing man with such incredble warmth. I'm in the process of reading one of his first books - Full Catastrophe Living. I've found it to be wonderful. Watch one of his videos, and see for yourself.

May 16, 2008 - Very dry presentation. Not for humans but for neo-cyber-mutant-humanoids. Might be something said under the psuedo-smart jargon.

Jun 1, 2008 - I think this technique -"observer state" of the mind- is a much better alternative instead of drugs and can lead to a greater flexibility and control of the mind . Of course it requires a lot of practice and discipline as well but the benefits are great and you'll save a lot of money which otherwise you'd have paid to the therapists.A question: what is the difference between mindfulness meditation and vipassana? Aren't they the same thing?

Jun 21, 2008 - Fascinating. There also appears to be a growing body of evidence that these types of therapy cause real change in synaptic connections rather than a change in chemical "balance". I feel that psychotropic medications are woefully inept at causing plastic synaptic change which is in many cases the culprit causing chemical "imbalance". Although drugs can help to allow one to function, I don't think they should be substituted for psychotherapy in patients for whom it would help.
zgubby2000 Says:
Jun 23, 2008 - I agree with you. But in my opinion, drugs are not so effective as they don't address the cause/root of the mental illnesses but with their effects/symptoms. Drugs are very usefull in case of severe mental illnesses though.
PianoIsTheRemedy Says:
Jun 23, 2008 - Agreed, there. I'm more concerned with overprescription for more mild cases in which these kinds of therapies would be more helpful or good at the very least as an adjunct to medication.

Jul 22, 2008 - In relation to this check out The New Paradigm in Psychology by Ruben Feldman Gonzalez. He talks about Unitary Perception which Jiddu Krishnamurti called meditation. It is not a technique because techniques are still within thought. Domhnall O Brien

Aug 14, 2008 - Obviously, we observe a true shift in paradigm of psychotherapy: the making of neuropsychotherapy. What is "exposure"? Skinner and Wolpe didn't believe we had to know nothing about "the black box" - now we do! And that knowledge will change, and it'll change therapy. "Exposure" is not only a "reciprocal inhibition" it is a psychological treatment technic that change neural structures. And that's not has not necessarilly be called "behavioural" therapy - it has to be called "neuropsychotherapy".

Aug 29, 2008 - Kabat-Zinn is a wonderful author and obviously also a leader in this field but I find this speaker is a much better lecturer. He gets to the point, obviously has planned his presentation in advance in a way that will transfer essential knowledge, and is not meandering and random.
