Sep 15, 2008 - How can you come to this conclusion when Reason can be "Rewired" to any good music production software which in turn would allow you to use independent VSTs...restrictive it isnt.

okidot Says:

Sep 15, 2008 - you are missing my point. yes it is restrictive, because in order to be able to rewire you must also own a different production program. you are basically saying on order for reason to be less restrictive you must own more software! This is a very different situation, which i clearly wasn't referring to. Using reason as a standalone production program can be restrictive. judging from the tone of your comment it seems that you are ridiculously over defensive of the program.

katzcivic Says:

Sep 15, 2008 - Actually Okidot, I agree, I did use reason for some projects a while back, I was thinking to myself the other day, what do I miss from Reason, i'd have to say and agree, Maelstrom, I do love the sounds it puts out, particularly bottle blows etc. But Reason can be run as a client via Rewire, so it could be used if need be.Also, in my line of work, I do much orchestral/cinematic style, I use very high end VST's and they just are so phenominal with my hardware modules. So I'll stick with VST's :)

okidot Says:

Sep 15, 2008 - yeh im actually in the process of getting reason4 to use rewired into ableton specifically for 'maelstrom'. i cant find any other synth like it. its amazing for making kick drums and subs. what orchestral vsts are you using. i own a copy of steinbergs edirol. this east west quantum leap looks amazing! massive gb useage though

katzcivic Says:

Sep 15, 2008 - Hi, I use eastwest quantum leap Gold Full edition and storm drum I and II, eastwest symphonic choirs and also Halion symphonic orchestra, which is also fantastic.Combined they are amazing. I also use a variety of synths, novation supernova II, A- station, Nexus 2, Vanguard & others.Which is why, I have no place for Reason :)But yep I do like maelstrom'...

crystaltipps04 Says:

Sep 16, 2008 - OK, I would say you are partially right.Reason isnt entirely unrestrictive, but what software is?.My point is I feel reason works perfect for me as in..if I want to put an idea down fast, before I lose "the feel".Then it is the right pallet for my ideas.

crystaltipps04 Says:

Sep 16, 2008 - Ive used other software-cubase,fl studio,cm studio, garage band.etc, and none of them come close to what I want. One of my musical friends hails from a DJ background,he prefers to work with LIVE as his work is sample/loop based.Whenever we collaborate our projects, its simple,we just rewire reason with live.

okidot Says:

Sep 16, 2008 - Well in general terms of music making, it is far from restrictive, but in my earlier comment, i was summing it up in comparison to other programs that allow you use a wide range of vst/vsti's, which reason does not. There are many variations of reasons and types of music making that require useage of certain vst's. It was on this basis i was referring to reason as restrictive. As regards software that is entirely unrestrictive, A.live seems to be the most versitile platform ive encountered.

DJDoseDNB Says:

Sep 18, 2008 - i love reason, ive come to learn it more and more over the years, my main problem with it is the initial sound engine it has in it, cubase is industry standard and the engine in that is top class...reason lacks a good output, mainly muffled so you have to compensate for that by making a rack to suit - which i have done. they need to sort the sound engine out in 5 and MAYBE (despite the dispute) make it possible to simply rewire straight to a VST. you can never have enough sounds

abletonmylive Says:

Oct 23, 2008 - YOu know what I am sick of hearing all these Reason Apologists out there, Everyone knows the sounds that come with reason sucks ass, I've been doing my research and I find FL studio sony acid pro and cubase sounds a whole lot better than reason. I've been using reason but I'm not at all impressed with it.

2pac4rap Says:

So I've decided to buy a new computer (probably an apple) thing is will a laptop be capable of running reason or will I need a desk top computer. Also do i need additional programs to run Reason or does it run on it's own. A response would be appreciated

wsandvik Says:

Oct 30, 2008 - the laptops work fine...i posted a video of the first song i mad on my apple which is 3 years old. It was the first of the Intel Cores....so you should be set....a new mac book will run reason with ease....and actually according to PC World the computer that actually ran Windows Vista the fastest...was the Mac Book Pro....Mac puts out powerful machines

sounduser Says:

Nov 4, 2008 - you want both!! reason is for making tunes and im pretty sure Fruit loops is like propellerhead recycle for making loops and remixing existing tunes. but basically you wanna buy ableton live!! Everyone I speak to say its the daddy!! im saving :D

CloudStrifeOfficial Says:

Nov 7, 2008 - I'd go with reason 4 anyday over fl, i just love the concept of a hardware emulator with endless amounts of hardware.. Thor is worth the asking price alone. u should get both though, i like the arpegiators on fl, but reason 4 has a new arp' unit anyway. i just got 4 last night, cant wait to get home from work anhave a good play with thor. I don't like what they have done with the sequencer and note editor tho, anyone know if i can turn that off so is like reason 3?

Cedarr1122 Says:

Nov 14, 2008 - You can create any type of music you want if you know how to use the program.Reason for the win!

machineinfection Says:

Nov 14, 2008 - I have always preferred reason.1. Low CPU usage.2. tons of free refills available online3. the nnxt sampler is amazing and simple.4. works well as a live synth too.5. lots of routing options for the audio6. ReWire reason into protools or logic for awesome possibilities.
