Sep 6, 2008 - piazza has a higher fp then bench and yogi what the fuck r you talkin bout
abustin Says:
Sep 6, 2008 - Stats, especially fielding %, can be misleading. Bench and Berra both had intangible characteristics that stats can't define. It's hard to judge one as better than the other without having seen them both in action, you can't rely on stats. But comparing Piazza to the great catchers of today, like Posada, Varitek, Pudge Rodriguez (I know I'm leaving some deserving catchers out), it's easy to see he is not comparable defensively, even if he has had more offensive production.
DiMagRocks Says:
Sep 6, 2008 - Fielding pc% is a stupid was of looking at defense.RF and Zone Rating are more accurate...... still not perfect, but far better than FP%.PS, show some class. Trying to denigrate someone like that is rude. Keep it clean.PPS, Berra and Piazza have the same Fielding percentage. But, like I said, that's a very ignorant way of looking at defensive value and efficiency.
DiMagRocks Says:
Sep 6, 2008 - Btw, just so there's no misunderstanding, I was talking about Boy21o0.Also, Bench actually has a higher fielding percentage than Piazza.Though I repeat, FP is a terrible way of looking at defensive value.
Boy21o0 Says:
Sep 6, 2008 - bench doesnt have higher batting stats and bench has played more years
DiMagRocks Says:
Sep 6, 2008 - Do you even look at league quality? There were far less good hitters in Berra's era, and far better pitchers.Berra was a top 5 player for 10 years. Piazza was NEVER a top 5 player, no once, maybe not even top 10 or 15.Look at hitting stats and pitching stats from then, then compare them to now.ERA's were much smaller then, BA and power numbers far less.
Boy21o0 Says:
Sep 6, 2008 - piazza is the greatest disscusion is over pitching dosent mean anything he has versed just as good maybe even better pithching as anyone else
DiMagRocks Says:
Sep 6, 2008 - No, he didn't.
MrNumbly Says:
Sep 6, 2008 - Who cares who the "best" catcher was, Yogi was certainly one of them, and NO ONE was the character Yogi was. Yogi is an American pop-culture icon.
redmustang03 Says:
Sep 6, 2008 - Its hard to look at this man now and say he was a baseball player. He was short and pudgy looking and didn't look like an athlete. But appearances are deceiving. Yankees fans know this, he appeared in 14 World Series won 10 of them with the Yankees. He may not have had all the skills but one thing you can say is that he was a winner.
ufund Says:
Sep 6, 2008 - Yogi Berra was a real ballplayer. My favorite memory of Berra was of him catching with Ted Williams at bat. Williams would come to the plate, determined, grinding the handle of the bat, step into the box, and then have to step out with a big grin on hs face from something Berra had said to him.

Sep 6, 2008 - a real ball player
throstle0luv Says:
Sep 6, 2008 - Piazza is not really good at fieldingfielding doesnt matter to years played, in fact his over-the-hill years actually decrease his FP. Piazza was drafted in the 62ND round. Bench, he makes up his not very offensive with his defense. Also, Mike Piazza actually originally play first base, while a lot of catchers has 1st base as a 2nd position or dont play 1st at all
Boy21o0 Says:
Sep 6, 2008 - Piazza fp is in fact better than bench he has the most hr as a cathcer all time he played first for a year on the mets and it didnt work out so he was traded where he played catcher im a sports journalist overall piazza is the greatest catcher of all time if you dont believe me compare stats and you'll get piazza as the best
surette69 Says:
Sep 6, 2008 - Mr. Clutch.
DiMagRocks Says:
Sep 6, 2008 - No..... Bench's FPCT% is .990, Piazza .989.Although you have to realize, FP is the single most overrated statistic in baseball. The difference between .990 and .989 is the difference between a fraction of a play a year. The fluctuations between FPCT% is small for most players, but yet the difference between a bag/good defensive player is way more than a few plays a year. Not to mention the fact that Bench is (by advanced defensive metrics) rated as the best defensive player ever.
DiMagRocks Says:
Sep 6, 2008 - Scratch that..... meant to say best defensive CATCHER, not PLAYER.And defensive metrics better indicate value on the defensive side of the ball, way more accurate that FPCT%, Range factor or Zone rating.

Sep 6, 2008 - love this guy. although I can't say he's the "best catcher", as there's Johnny Bench, but simply he's one of the best of all time. go Berra
