Oct 3, 2008 - No, the Vienna Phil. did not have women players (it's by INVITATION to join the Phil. Society) until the late 1990's. This would have had to be around 1983-85 gauging by von Karajan's appearance. It's funny though... when I was on the board of the Detroit Symphony there was a big push to change the audition policies. "Blind Auditions" where we could only HEAR the players were both "sexist" and "racist" since only white men seemed to qualify for orchestra seats...

Oct 5, 2008 - what makes karajan so unique (i shouldn't say the best) is the fact that he's got such a flawless sound. toscanini and stokowski also got their own unique sound, but karajan's sound is most noticeable when listening.

Oct 7, 2008 - The "boom-cha, boom cha" in the beginning is funny... The sound of the orchestra is thrilling, but I could imagine it to be a little bit more subtile.-----------------------------Rolf, Netherlands.I am a collector of classical 78's and lp'sClick "otterhouse" above to see (and hear!)some of my collection.(Gioconda de Vito, Berl Senofsky, Vlado Perlemuter,Carl Schuricht, Gina Bachauer etc)
