Nov 27, 2008 - "Genial"! Brahms was a crusty, sarcastic old fellow, though he related well to children and was a loyal friend to the Schumanns. As for Von Karajan, he wasn't what I'd describe as genial; indeed he was lucky that his past membership of the Nazi Party wasn't held against him. Having said all that, I love Brahms and his music, can put up with Von Karajan and regard the Berlin Philharmonic as having been probably the best orchestra in the world in 1981. Too bad they appointed Rattle.
