Sep 7, 2008 - this is ridiculous- while the singing is good, this is really dumbing down opera to appeal to the MTV crowd. More like "popera".
darewolf Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - I've seen this same production at LA opera last year. You should see Manon's ending death scene, her acting was absolutely sublime.
chrisibzu Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - you're right

Sep 7, 2008 - deberia de enseñar pelos ya que esta en el tubo no?????
OperaBR Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - I prefer a traditional production of Manon, but this is a valid production as well. The history of Manon doesn't have any particular aspect that could "confine" it to the 18th century. The 50's also retain some of the glamour and desire of liberty, fame and money that is very present in the society that the opera Manon shows. It's not ideal, but very interesting. And Netrebko sings very well (albeit no real trills) and looks breathtakingly sexy!
joanabanyeres Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - Yes it should be in 18thcentury for rgere is minuetto music in " Le cours la Reine " She is very sexy, but why it's so important?Important is singing well and acting as l'abbé Prévost would have liked to see.

Sep 7, 2008 - As a Graduate student of Phlosophy specifically Opera and Music I am in the process of making my topic for my masters on Interpretation of Opera I believe we never have a totally set way to produce opera or perform it as we are no longer able to ask the composers what they would prefer.I think many woudl agree that you need to make it accessible to each audience on its own merits.
sarasava Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - Anna is a great actress! And her singing is fantastic!
bjou520 Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - Popera is not bad for beginner. It takes time to require the taste of opera. My father was music professor who had many many recordings. I had never once touched opera until I was 35 years old. MTV may be a good tool to introduce opera to new opera fan.
operadoc Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - She has a very very good voice and can do some good acting. The marketing of her as an opera singer with sex appeal has allowed for a meteoric rise in her career far out of her proportion to her abilities as an operatic artist. That is why I have a problem with her. She still needs to grow a lot in order to be great
fiddlerontheroof2 Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - Her voice has improved a lot over the years but i think the problem with "sex appeal" is her manager's handling of her career and how they direct her MTV videos.
operadoc Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - I do find her voice appealing but I am not thrilled with her phrasing or expression. She has a lot to learn
bokensdorf Says:

Sep 7, 2008 - What a waste of time! Philosophy of Opera and Music? Some people must be desperate in making a living as an academic it seems. LoL
TheInquisitive4Ever Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - Netrebko cannot be taught a good technique, class, elegance and grace. This shiksa is 36-37 year of age. It's too late.
mummacole Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - Your comment is a waste of time and intellectual ability.Just because it is not for you does not make it wrong.I have no desire to become an academic .Having spent my life as a mother and working exec chef,I find the questions allowed by Philosophy to be wide and given to teasing the intellect into areas of knowledge that are not well travelled. One should always be careful of pointing fingers,as all it tends to do is highlight your own ignorance and small mindedness
TheInquisitive4Ever Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - Mum-Last time I checked, people with well developed intellect do not become chef. So, try to be humble a bit. Do you even know what philosophy is or is not? I won't bother asking a similar question in regard to opera. The reason should be obvious to you.
dntpntr Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - I've been following all your venomous comments wherever there's a Netrebko videoclip and let me tell you from all my heart: YOU'RE AN IDIOT!!!
TheInquisitive4Ever Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - dnt-Instead of making empty comment, try substantiating your opinion. Netrebko goes off pitch to often in pretty much everything she sings, her vibrato is whobbly and she does have a weak coloratura. Above all, she lacks class and grace as the great sopranos of the past possessed. Now get lost you Romanian fiddlestick!
dntpntr Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - I became an American citizen in Garden City, NY, in 1997, you schmuck! Metropolitan Opera is a place where I go often.
TheInquisitive4Ever Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - dnt-Aren't you the lucky one eh? lol I should congratulate you on becoming a US citizen. I must have taken some effort to get out of the slums from Romania for which you deserve credit. But then again, one can take a person out of a slum, and yet not the slum out of a person.

scroogeII Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - well...at least this performance is not as slutty as the production of the Vienna State Opera.Anyway, I think this staging presents very clearly who Manon is and what she wants...
