Nov 19, 2008 - I agree; it's an interesting what-if to wonder what Brian could've done in the absence of drugs. He was pretty much gone by '69 and was a total recluse by the mid '70s.

Nov 19, 2008 - I don't know how true this is. The Beatles derived a LOT from the Beach Boys. McCartney used quite a bit of inspiration from Pet Sounds on Revolver and especially on Sgt. Pepper. Overall the Beatles are remembered as the biggest band of all time, but it doesn't necessarily equate to being the most talented musicians or songwriters. Brian Wilson, I feel, was far more talented (especially in production - the Beatles relied heavily on George Martin).

Nov 19, 2008 - Well, John didn't handle his fame completely easily. Help! was a confession about the downsides of fame. But with the Beatles in regards to production you really have to take into account that the Beatles were very lucky to have George Martin as their producer. Brian did it all and played some of the instruments on Pet Sounds as well (xylophone and some others). He was an ingenious producer and at a very young age!

Nov 19, 2008 - I agree with Brian Wilson being an amazing producer. The Beatles did have to rely heavily on George Martin. But IMO, John Lennon was a better songwriter. Brian Wilson was better at producing and arranging music.

Nov 21, 2008 - The Beach Boys' influence on The Beatles' work that came after Pet Sounds was notable, especially with Paul. His bass lines became more free and melodic, and his writing took a slightly different tone, from a more inward perspective. George Martin has spoken many times of his awe of Brian Wilson, and the studio experimentation went berzerk after PS, starting with Sgt Pepper. Certainly they were doing the same drugs for a bit, but the stuff Brian was doing was a catalyst for super-dynamism.

Nov 22, 2008 - No one in a successful, and famous band is a "joke". I'm a musician, and I've come to realize it's the collective contributions that make the magic. It's chemistry without a doubt--a balance--a little bit of this, a lot of that. Mike Love is not the big composer, or the world's best singer. But his vocal character and nuance is an essential part of the Beach Boy's magic!
