anonimoenmx Says:

Jul 18, 2007 - auscultation is the best part of the belly exam i think

freyman1976 Says:

Jul 31, 2007 - it should if you are listening for bowel sounds, but just to check the aortas it doesn't have any influence

freyman1976 Says:

Jul 31, 2007 - yes, but I don't think she was listening for bowel sounds, rather checking aortas for aneurysm

s2akinola Says:

Sep 21, 2007 - exellent exam. just that it should be mentioned that exposure should be upto the mid thigh to detect hernias and pfannenstiel scars.Shittu

musicjam86 Says:

Dec 3, 2007 - Shouldnt auscultation come BEFORE palpation so that bowel movements wont be influenced by the palpation?

sportswear Says:

Dec 10, 2007 - she says that she would check at the end for hernias etc. I think its a nice exam.

Medifro Says:

Jan 9, 2008 - Auscultation before palpation, because of bowel movments?I didnt read that in any book, nither any mentor told me that :s

Jan 9, 2008 - auscultation should come befor palpation we learned that un nursing school

loldongz Says:

Jan 10, 2008 - That's right. Abdominal examination order differs from all others, due to bowel movements. It's Inspection -> Auscultation -> Percussion -> Palpation.

Honest2theextreme Says:

Jan 18, 2008 - Wish i had a hot female doctor like her? Id go for check ups all the time

badseed86 Says:

Jan 20, 2008 - yeah you re right

sabotago Says:

Jan 31, 2008 - Yes. Palpation will stimulate bowel movements and may create false bowel sounds.

Medifro Says:

Feb 1, 2008 - @sabogao:I actually told my mentor after I read it here, and he disagreed. Also, many other consultants disagreed as well! Can you give me a name of any book that mentions it? Its not in Barba Bate's, or Nicholas Tally's .. I'll look over pubmed, but if you have a specifc link that would be much appreciated.

sabotago Says:

Feb 1, 2008 - Well, all the surgeons I contacted with taught me like that. And in the book "Mosby's Guide to Physical Examination", states in page 541: "Unlike the usual sequence, auscultation of the abdomen always precedes percussion and palaption, because these maneuvers may alter the frequency and intensity of bowel sounds". It's pretty logical I think.

Mar 30, 2008 - Good examination but just one point to note - the patient should be tilted to the right when palpating the spleen if it is not palpable after the routine palpation. The reason being that mild to moderate splenomegaly can only be felt while the patient is tilted as this brings the spleen forward.By tradition, auscultation is normally done last and you're expected to do so in medical exams as most examiners follow this protocol. But in reality, it does not make a difference in clinical practice.

punkstar524 Says:

May 28, 2008 - One comment, First its the inspection and then its the auscultation in the abdominal exam !

beetlejus98 Says:

Jun 13, 2008 - i think in the UK we still practice auscultation as the last thing to do... esp in the final year exam.

cscdierdre Says:

gloriousrose00 Says:

Nov 2, 2008 - In OHCM it says one can auscultate first before anything to prevent an abdominal aneurysm(if any) from rupture, but you'll have to explain to the examiner why you wana auscultate first. THis reason should be accepted, the book says.
