Sep 21, 2008 - thats very nice. I like it!as an answer to the title i would say the guitar is played live, sting changes the volume twice in the beginning and it affects the sound and the playing.

Sep 23, 2008 - Legendary performance - I think its pretty simple - he tuned the guitar so he would not need a capo - thats really nothing for guys like him.
typicalwebster Says:
Sep 26, 2008 - I don't think Sting would've messed with tuning his guitar up a half-step. Using a capo would've been much easier, and it would've saved him from retuning his guitar back down to standard. I think the reason for the half step difference (From C# minor recorded to this D minor version) is that the audio from the video has been raised about a half step. This usually happens in old recordings.

Oct 10, 2008 - I got an old audio tape of the album The Secret Policeman Concert which I lovingly preserved since the early 80s. Lots of really great acoustic stuff from Sting, Collins, Donovan and Geldof. Clapton was jamming with Beck to top all that. I've been trying to get the DVD or CD of this album forever.

Oct 11, 2008 - stings team would have tweaked it in post production prior to release. If u want to see the real key look at a live recording on some fans cam fone

maartenvdbent Says:
Oct 24, 2008 - "Theatrical features originally photographed at 24 fps are simply sped up by 4% to 25 fps. While this is usually not noticed in the picture it causes a slightly noticeable increase in audio pitch by about one semitone, which is sometimes corrected using a pitch shifter, though pitch shifting is a recent innovation and supersedes an alternative method of telecine for 25 fps formats. However, a difference between the two is rarely noticed unless the original audio is compared with the pitched audio"

Nov 1, 2008 - I love this version. I remember seeing this YEARS ago and always wished I had it on cd so I could listen to it any time but back then you couldn't get it that way. Now, with the arpanet we have it! Thank you arpanet!
plyror Says:
Nov 2, 2008 - could you explain that
maartenvdbent Says:
Nov 3, 2008 - my other comment somehow disappeared :S (I made two already). The thing is that this video was filmed on film, which has 24 frames per second. When it is transferred to television it is sped up a little (4%) to give it a framerate of 25 frames per second (PAL tv). It results in the pitch being a semitone higher.Look for "Telecine" on wikipedia for more info (I somehow can't post the link here)

Nov 3, 2008 - I've watched scores of live versions of Message, both The Police and Sting solo, and this is easily the best. It just has that indefinable something.
