Usually just the threat of court will work! If you offer to allow them some input and tell them your doing it anyways i bet they will fold! They like to see the panels in a fenced back yard and not on the roof, but you put them where they work the best! Do some research in your state and have a copy of the law for their files! I HATE HOME OWNERS LAWS!

Dec 22, 2008 - so it's 50watts per minute/hour/day? I'm thinking per hour because you could probably hook up a bike generator or something and produce more than 50w a day.
marculuv Says:
Dec 22, 2008 - the 50 watts is based on an hour of full production. The total hours of full production per day are Based upon where he lives, the time of year, and orientation of the panels.

Dec 22, 2008 - Keep in mind that anything running off of this system needs to be replaced with a DC version as opposed to standard AC.Also, this system is not tied into the grid, so there is no rebate for it, and you do not get to sell peak hour electricity produced back to the utility. When you factor all of this together, this actually seems like a very expensive system, per watt.

Dec 22, 2008 - Ah, but is it? Pay back is in the savings on the electric bill and being green is a big deal to me.& I do have an inverter. Thanks for the comment.

Dec 24, 2008 - Hi Rick,Great clip. I didn't even know you could walz down to Harbor Freight and pull this off the shelf. You shot the video a year ago, how about a follow-up with any new tips and tricks gleaned since? Folks sure would appreciate your thoughts.Take care,-Robert
london1817 Says:
Dec 24, 2008 - Hey Robert, Harbor freight (well the store near me) has all kinds of cheaper solar panels and on live they have better panels. I will be making a new video soon as a follow up on this. I have made alot of changes and have learned things here and there on solar. Thanks for your great comment! Merry Christmas & happy new year. -Rick.

Dec 27, 2008 - Excuse me, but do you know what DIY videos are supposed to be? They supposed to show us how to build or make a thing like that. You just show us the complete thing. And you call 250 $ cheap?
london1817 Says:
Dec 27, 2008 - $250 is about as cheap as you can possibly go with solar panels, power charge controller, lights and wires. Check prices on EBAY. You might want to be sitting down & holding on to something.

Dec 31, 2008 - I would love to be able to ınstall a cheap solar power system, but I think as your video shows they are still not cheap. I think you said you run two 5w lamps for $250. Is that really economic especially as you have not factored in the replacement cost of the batteries at some point. Well done for cutting down on your bills and CO2 production but I feel it is just tokenism (mainly because the producers of the solar kit wont bring down thier prices to realistic levels).

Jan 6, 2009 - By my math your now paying (with that system) 10 cents per KW more then current utility rate. This is NOT counting replacement of battery as often as once per year (not to mention the carbon deficit of making Lead Acid Batteries) but being generous I figured you might get 5 years out of the battery. Better to use solar and wind energy to produce hydrogen and store it compressed. Then burn the Hydrogen to power a generator AND provide residual heat. IMHO
london1817 Says:
Jan 6, 2009 - That is a great idea. I would like to come over & check out your system you built. You must have some very cool stuff built right??????

Jan 7, 2009 - is hooking a solar panel up to a battery the only way to get electricity into your house?

london1817 Says:
Dec 21, 2008 - Oh man,, I don't know what to say to that. I guess you could always build a exercise bike generator hooked to your battery bank. Rick.
