Dec 31, 2006 - Marcia Ball is fantastic. All soul no matter where she comes from. Virtuoso sax too.Saw another brilliant "Louisiana" performance at the Cambridge MA Club Passim Campfire. Kate Klim on piano was accompanied by Antje Duvekot, Anäis Mitchell, Kym Tuvim and Meg Hutchinson. It brought the house down.Peace~Doktor Krankheit

Jan 24, 2007 - Just wonderful. I saw Marcia at the Belly Up Tavern a few years ago, pre-Katrina, and there wasn't a dry eye in the house when she sang this song....

barriethedog Says:
Apr 19, 2008 - sorry to disagree with most previous comments, but it's bland. Nice enough for a 'pub' singer (indeed I'd be glad to hear her in this kind of environment), but so far removed from the original it's a tad excruciating. She misses the notes that give the song poignance. Listen to Randy and you'll see. For a (good) cover try Martin Simpson.

Jul 19, 2008 - Great version. Still, note the slight (but not accudental, it seems) change in the lyrics. Why has the "little fat man" that accompanies President Coolidge been changed to just a "little man"?

Aug 1, 2008 - as a man as beautifully she sings
MFEVANREENEN Says:
Aug 2, 2008 - No matter who sings them, Randy's songs will always stand out. Be it a good, a great or a bad singer - they still will not be denied. They are great songs.

Aug 3, 2008 - Anyone who lived in New Orleans in the 80s could tell you that Leigh Harris (L'il Queenie) always closed her shows with a very moving version of this song.

Oct 18, 2008 - Saw Marcia do this song at the R&R Festival just days after the storm. Hugh crowd, outdoors, late afternoon, and yet a stunned silence...except for the occassional sob. The song was obviously powerful to her as well. I was close to the stage and swear she had genuine tears in her eyes by the end of the song.
