Raw, punishing set from their US debut, an URB exclusive...URB magazine presents B Team, who followed Beans at our monthly party in NYC last Thursday. We're doing this in three ten-minute clips, because we're serious about music, and fully checking out bands requires time. These cats get up in a myriad of styles, from baroque hip-hop, to metal, to Tracy Chapman-esque folk. The vocalist/MC hits a high falsetto croon during some straight balladeering, delivers sing-song narrative tales like Mike Skinner, over-explains with a whiny, angry dysfunction like Eminem, and at times does the plaintiff cracked tones of Beanie or Jay-Z. His natural voice seems to be the clipped downward tones of a snub-nose hood rat.Despite their angry menacing gestures, the band is camera-shy to the point of a constant self-effacement, but they rock pretty hard.We're sorry we didn't tape enough of the audience -- sisters were livelying up themselves quite nicely and even a few brothers were compelled past a head nod.
