Part 1/2. From the Wide Awake Club on TV-am in May 1985, an ad break, followed by a hilarious encounter between Roland Rat, Tommy Boyd and US pop star David Cassidy. Roland also meets the 1985 Eurovision winners for Norway, Bobbysocks (Hanne Krogh & Elisabeth Andreassen), and plays a video of 'Let It Swing'. Also appearing are Rolf Harris and Jean Marsh. Taped in August 1986, this is a sequence from 4-Tel On View, Channel 4's daytime pages from teletext service. This was broadcast during the day, alternating with the test card, when there were no programmes scheduled. It's accompanied by some superb classical piano music (the main reason I recorded this in the first place). This is a 10 min extract from that tape.

TV and Wmbledon nostalgia from 1985. The end of kids programme Chock-a-Block, BBD1 continuity (with a noticeable absence of programme trailers, by today's standards), and the start of the day's live coverage of Wmbledon 85 with Harry Carpenter on ladies semi-finals day. Then in the second clip (now about 10 mins into the live transmission), Dan Maskell and Virginia Wade set the scene on a hot sunny July day on Centre Courrt, as the crowd wait for the first match of the day, Martina Navratilova v Zena Garrison, to start. Wed 17 Sept 1986, and a late programme change as Bill Roache introduces a tribute to Pat Phoenix, who had died that morning. The rest of this 30 min programme was a collection of some of her performances on Corontion Street. The Granada continuity announcer was the late Jim Pope (for many years the voice of University Challenge). Also included is the ad break.

More TV and Wmbledon nostalgia from 1985. By special request....a longer clip of the end of kids programme Chock-a-Block (a repeat from 1981), the BBD1 prog junction (startlingly clear of prog trailers - by today's standards), leading into Wmbledon 85 and the start of the day's live coverage of ladies semi-finals day. Continuing this brief trawl through some long forgotten tapes in my video collection, comes this classic Granada closedown sequence, with that wonderful theme music. Charles Foster is the announcer on the late shift in Manchester in this clip from Wed 5 Aug 1987, which also includes an ad break. These closedown sequences were consigned to history from 13 Feb 88, when Granada went 24 hours. ITV musical promo...

Massiel sings the winning song for Spain, 'La La La', at the 1968 Eurovision Song Contest from the Royal Albert Hall in London on 06/04/68. This is her reprise performance of the song at the end of the show, when she sings the final chorus in English (something not allowed during the actual contest in those days). This is followed by the orchestra playing out to the closing credits.This was the first ESC to be available in colour, although virtually all European stations were still only transmitting in black & white at the time. So very few people would have actually seen the live transmission in colour. Even in the host country, the UK, the live transmission was only in B & W, as BBD1 had yet to go colour. However, a colour recording was shown the next day on BBD2 (the only colour channel), for the benefit of the handful of viewers who had bought one of the very expensive new colour TVs.

From late Sat night 22 August 1987, here is another Granada closedown sequence that I've found whilst going through some of my old tapes. Beverley Ashworth in Manchester closes down the channel at the late hour of 3.00am. And they have a few problems getting the weather slide to appear, as you will see. By this date Granada was now broadcasting late on Friday and Saturday nights, and the start of 24 hour TV at Granada (13 Feb 88) was less than 6 months away.Unfortunately this recording ends prematurely, during the closedown theme.**Many thanks to Robin Carmody for working out the exact date of this clip for me**

Part 2/2. The final part of the Points Of View programme on BBD TV from 1962, introduced by Robert Robinson. This was the weekly slot for viewers to have their say on current BBD TV programmes (continued from part 1).The next item here is from TV 50 Week on BBD2 in Nov 1986. The BBD TV in-vision continuity announcers of the sixties were invited back for one week to present the programmes. Here, Meryl O'Keeffe presents a programme, and shares some memories of TV in the sixties.

(TV) Points Of...

This is a BBC TV interlude film from the 1950s - The White Kitten. There were several of these films made, such as The Potter's Wheel, The Windmill, The Spinning Wheel, Ploughing, and London to Brighton in 4 minutes. They became almost as famous as the programmes of the day.Most TV in the 1950s was live, as until the arrival of video recording in 1958, the only means of recording a programme was by film recording (telecine). So there were often gaps between programmes which needed filling, hence the Interlude films. They were also used during technical breakdowns. But they did give the viewer a chance to catch their breath between programmes. From Mon 22 Sept 1986, here is another in this series of Granada closedown sequences that I recorded in the 80s. The final few moments of The Sweeeney are followed by a programme trailer and an ad break. Charles Foster is the announcer on the late shift in Manchester. The much loved closedown theme music is the 'New Granada Theme' by Keith Mansfield and Derek Hilton - a specially commissioned piece which was used from 1977 until Granada went 24 hours on 13 Feb 1988. Sadly, from this date closedowns were consigned to TV history. And don't forget to switch off your computer.....Goodnight!
