Ion Propulsion - Transport System to the PlanetsThe efficiency of a rocket engine can be described by its specific impulse, which is the change of momentum gained from a 1 kilogram weight of propellent.The Space Shuttle main engines have a specific impulse of 453 seconds which is typical of a liquid fuelled rocket engine.An Ion thruster has a specific impulse of more than 3000 seconds and so requires less than a sixth of the fuel of a liquid fuelled engine.Gridded electrostatic ion thrusters commonly utilize Xenon gas. The gas is first ionized by bombarding it with electrons. The positively charged ions then diffuse through the positive grid and enter a potential difference between the positive and negative grids. The potential difference accelerates the ions to high velocities, which then leave the engine to create thrust. An electron emitter, on the exterior of the engine, neutralizes the ion beam to prevent charge build-up.The typical thrust of an ion engine is equivalent to a weight of 10 grams - about the weight of a sheet of paper.This means ion thrusters need to provide continuous thrust for a very long time in order to achieve a reasonable change in velocity. BSL does not address these root causes behind dog attacks. It simply blames a particular breed or breeds without actually solving the real problem of irresponsible ownership and lack of education. BSL is illogical, expensive, and ineffective. Non-breed-specific dangerous dog laws and anti-cruelty laws are more effective, provided those laws are strongly written and firmly enforced. Increased education (especially for dog owners and children) will also help reduce dog bites/attacks, as will low-cost spay/neuter campaigns. We need more funding for animal control agencies to enforce the laws and tackle dog fighting. These strategies make sense. BSL is a wet bandaid. BSL

What if gadget users were presented an intuitive development system and also became gadget developers? Having non-programmers building gadgets may be a significant win given that more developers will build more diverse Gadgets which could lead to even wider user adoption. More importantly, this gives end-users the opportunity to personalize gadgets whose value others could easily appreciate. Furthermore, end-users have more specific domain knowledge allowing them to share highly targeted domain-specific gadgets. And although end-users may not be programmers and they may not know HTML and JavaScript, they do know how to use gadgets. The challenge we are therefore facing is to make building gadgets as simple as usinggadgets.In this talk, we present and demo Geppeto: End-User Tool for Gadget Composition, a research project which received a Google Research Award.
