This is the first leg of this year's trek to Wrens, GA to visit family for Thanksgiving. I had technical difficulties with the audio capture so none of this year's Thanksgiving series has the audio I normally have on tape.This video shows an IFR departure from Leesburg, VA (KJYO), my climb through the clouds and my breakout to crystal blue skies on top at 9800'.We had planned to fly straight through to Thomson, GA (KHQU), but biological needs necessitated a stop in North Carolina. My original plan was to land at Person County/Roxboro, NC (KTDF), but the Raleigh controller told me he had a plane go missed there 20 minutes before without seeing the field. (The glideslope was out of service.) That's when we decided to divert to Raleigh/Durham International (KRDU). MD11 has 2 Autopilots (AP) and Auto Flight System (AFS) provides automatic flying of ILS precision approaches to Cat II, IIIA and IIIB weather minimums. During approach when some prerequisites are satisfied pilots must press the APPR/LAND switch on the Flight Control Panel to arm the land mode. Pilots have to configure flaps, landing gear, spoilers and autobrake manually. Upon localizer capture the aircraft begins to maneuver with a maximum roll rate of 5 degrees/sec and up to 30 degrees of bank to track the localizer, and after established, bank angle limits are changed to 10 degrees. GS capture can occur from above or below the beam with up to 3 degrees intercept. If AFS redundancies are satisfied DUAL LAND is engaged, if not SINGLE LAND or APPR ONLY (manual landing) may be annunciated. Some Redundancy requirements for DUAL LAND: Autothrottle (ATS) engagedDual ILS tuned operational, and identified with valid ILS coursesDual radio altimeters operational3 hydraulic systemsIf crosswind is present (max 15kt) a forward slip runway alignment maneuver is initiated at 150 feet above the ground. Parallel rudder removes crab angle while the upwind wing is lowered to maintain the beam center and aircraft track. Flare mode is initiated automatically at 50ft Radio Altimeter. At flare initiation, a nose up control column pulse is activated to enhance pilot awareness and recognition of beginning of the flare. ATS control to the retard schedule until the aft limit is reached. At touchdown, the sink rate should normally be less than 5 ft/sec and nose lowering commences immediately following touchdown of the main landing gear. After touchdown the AP provides continuous nose down command to ensure firm contact with the runway during the landing rollout phase. Rollout to a stop is under automatic control. When the engine reversers are manually applied by the pilot, the autothrottles are disconnected. Approach and landing at Innsbruck (LOWI) using the LLZ/DME east approach for runway 26, and visual circling to runway 08.Landing at LOWI is quite interesting. The LLZ/DME (or LOC/DME) east approach for runway 26 starts at the RTT (Rattenberg) NDB, 26 nm from LOWI. Leaving RTT on a heading of 210 degrees, descend to 9500 feet MSL and intercept the OEV localizer at 21 nm DME. At 18.2 DME, start the descent with the localizer, which has a 5 degree offset from the runway 26 centerline. Check your distance and altitude at 16, 14, 12, 10, 8 nm DME. At the AB (Absam) NDB 6.3 nm DME (4400 feet MSL), continue visually. Expect BARO minimums between 3900-4400 feet depending on you category and maximum climb gradient. If you are landing on runway 26, just continue straight ahead. If you like challenges, do the visual circling for runway 08. At the AB NDB, turn left to a heading 230 degrees, descend to 3700 feet, and fly towards the INN NDB. Before you reach the mountains :), turn right to a heading of 265 degrees, and fly this heading until OEV 3.2 nm DME (you will find power lines below you, heading the same direction). Turn right for a very short base, start descending, align yourself with the runway centerline and land.In Innsbruck, it doesn't matter if you're a bit high, it's much worse if you're too low! The reconstruction uses data retrieved from the Digital Flight Data Recorder and excerpts from the Cockpit Voice Recorder transcript. After a quick turn-around trip to Gatlinburg-Pigeon Forge, our return to PDK Atlanta in heavy IMC was alot more fun and very interesting. We both brushed up on actual IFR shit to MDH. Enroute we had some light icing that the Cirrus SR-22 dealt with nicely. Obviously we were on an IFR flight plan. Our approach into PDK was a lot of fun, we shot an ILS to runway two-zero left. Route was HSY - V463 - V222 - LOGEN - Direct PDK to the localizer for ILS 20 left. I had a great flight back and brushed up on some skills in actual IMC.
