A fluorocarbon-based ferrofluid, with about 400-G saturation magnetization and low field magnetic susceptibility of 3, is placed within a glass Hele-Shaw cell of 1.1-mm gap. Magnetic fields are applied that have in-plane clockwise rotating and dc axial magnetic fields. The ferrofluid is surrounded by a 50/50 mixture of isopropyl alcohol and deionized water, which prevents ferrofluid wetting of the glass plates. In all cases, the rotational field strength is 20 G rms, and the frequency is 25 Hz. The dc magnetic field will be increased from 0 to 100 to 200 G.The first experiment uses a 50-µl drop of ferrofluid. The dc axial field is first increased to 100 G, and then the clockwise rotating field is turned on. The ferrofluid drop is circular before the magnetic field is applied. When the dc magnetic field is applied, the ferrofluid drop forms a spiking labyrinth pattern. Then the clockwise rotating field is applied, and the spikes begin to curl in on themselves, forming a smooth spiral pattern after some of the spikes are absorbed into the larger structure. The smooth spirals form from viscous shear as the clockwise rotating magnetic field causes counterclockwise flow on the outside ferrofluid surfaces, which return on the inside surfaces.The second experiment uses a 200-µl drop of ferrofluid. First, the clockwise rotating field is applied, which causes a counterclockwise flow that holds the circular fluid drop together without spikes. Then a 100-G dc axial field is gradually applied. This results in the ferrofluid drop appearing to expand before a phaselike transition at a critical dc magnetic field strength around 100 G. Careful observations show that the pattern forms at slightly less than 100-G dc field under a thin ferrofluid coating on the top glass plate, which then abruptly peels away at slightly increased dc axial magnetic field. The magnetic field is then increased from 100 to 200 G to form an intricate internal pattern surrounded by a circle of ferrofluid with spiraled arms. The second experiment is repeated again three more times under essentially identical conditions, with common features but it appears that the fine features are different each time.Acknowledgments: This research is supported by National Science Foundation Grant No. CTS-0084070. This is me getting a Thoracentesis at Harborview Medical Center in downtown Seattle. They removed 1200cc of Plural Fluid from my lung cavity. The fluid was around my left lung causing it to collapse.Procedure = ThoracentesisFluid = Plural Fluid / Plural EffusionVolume = 1200ccOn Tuesday August 28th 2007 I was in a motorcycle accident. I was struck by a car turning right from my left. Due to the angle of the car I was hit directly by the front corner of the car. The force of my body broke both the passenger side window and windshield. I then rolled over the hood of the car, and landed 60ft away on the ground, and from pure adrenalin stood up. My 2000 Yamaha R1 was thrown 110ft.I wasn't on my feet for long. While I was laying there on the ground waiting for the ambulance to arrive I honestly thought I was going to die before it got there. They sky started spinning, with an almost euphoric feeling. Only able to take small sips of air I could feel something in my stomach bleeding and my abdomen getting stiff filling with blood.After spending 9 days at Harborview hospital, 2 days in the ICU and 7 in the trauma surgery unit, I'll be recovering at home for a couple of months at least. For the next 2-3 months all I can physically do is walk and sit. I can ride in a car so long as it is smooth and care is taken to avoid any jolting or bumping movements.My spleen was shattered; it is now dying in my body. They chose not to remove it because it clotted up and the internal bleeding was minimized. A few years ago this would have meant an emergency spleenectomy; however, now the thinking is less surgery the better. My spleen will slowly die while my body absorbs it. My left kidney was also lacerated; luckily it will heal on its own.From the force of the accident and the blunt trauma to my left side, fluid built up between my ribs and lung. The pressure from this caused my left lung to collapse. Before allowing me to leave the hospital my doctor insisted on draining my chest cavity. A tube was inserted in my back and over 1 liter, or 40 oz, of emissary fluid was removed from surrounding over 50% of my lung.My left forearm has a large cut on it resulting from the impact of my body on the windshield of the car. An approximately two inch part of the windshield was shoved up inside my jacket sleeve and lodged between the skin and bone of my forearm. The nurses stuck two fingers and a thumb inside my arm to dig out pieces of the glass.I tore and splintered a ton of muscles, ligaments, and tendons throughout my torso, including my shoulders, neck, chest, abdomen, and waist.I have some moderate to severe road rash on my left shin and knee and on my right knee. Luckily it wasn't severe enough to require skin graphs.Unbelievably I didn't break any bones or receive a head injury.I'm now staying at my aunt's house in Redmond while I recover. I'm not sure how long I will be here.Two days after I was released from Harborview I went in to Evergreen hospital in Redmond where they tapped my chest cavity and removed 550cc of fluid from around my left lung. I wanted to fine a way to protect an egg from breaking when it decelerated rapidly. I wanted to apply extreme acceleration and then ultimate deceleration, hitting a solid object and have the egg survive. My plan was to surround the egg with a non-Newtonian fluid. The idea was that the force of hitting the ground would be distributed evenly across the surface of the egg. By doing this, the egg with its natural strength would stay in one piece.As it turns out, the egg is buoyant when in the non-Newtonian fluid that I created. This meant that the force would only be distributed over 80% or so of the surface of the egg. Will it work?
