Los archipiélagos que forman parte del Parque Nacional (Cíes, Ons, Sálvora y Cortegada) no tienen una historia homogénea, aunque sí presentan aspectos comunes por el propio hecho de ser islas más o menos alejadas del continente, muy condicionadas por el medio físico y siempre vinculadas a las Rías Bajas.A continuación se resume brevemente la historia de cada unos de ellos, de manera conjunta la de Cíes y Ons por presentar importantes similitudes.CÍES Y ONSSÁLVORACORTEGADAEn cuanto a protección de la naturaleza se refiere, la historia conjunta de estas islas comienza en 1980 con la declaración de las Islas Cíes como Parque Natural. En 1988 este archipiélago también fue declarado ZEPA (Zona de Especial Protección para las Aves), al igual que el de Ons en el 2001. Después de que se empezara a plantear la creación del primer Parque Nacional gallego, como representante de los sistemas ligados a las zonas costeras y la plataforma continental de la Región Eurosiberiana, la Xunta de Galicia aprobó en 1999 el Plan de Ordenación de los Recursos Naturales de las Islas Atlánticas (Decreto 274/1999, de 21 de octubre). Aunque los primeros estudios incluyeron las islas Sisargas y Lobeiras y otros espacios costeros, finalmente fueron los archipiélagos de Cíes, Ons, Sálvora y Cortegada los que se incluyeron en la declaración del Parque Nacional Marítimo-Terrestre de las Islas Atlánticas de Galicia, en la Ley 15/2002, de 1 de julio. Poco antes de ello la Xunta de Galicia también había aprobado el Plan de Ordenación de los Recursos Naturales de la Isla de Cortegada y su entorno (Decreto 88/2002, de 7 de marzo). ISLAS CIES
