Die Rebsorte Carmenère stammt ursprünglich aus dem Bordeaux in Frankreich, wo sie bis zur Reblaus Plage Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts sehr häufig angebaut wurde. Nach der Reblaus Plage wurden bei der Neuanlage der Rebflächen andere Sorten der schwierigen Carmenere-Rebe vorgezogen, so dass Sie in Europa fast völlig verschwand. In Chile hingegen wird die Sorte seit 1850 erfolgreich angebaut. Damals wurde Carmenere häufig mit dem ähnlich aussehenden Merlot verwechselt. Erst 1994 wurde per Gen-Analyse endgültig geklärt, was Merlot und was Carmenere war.Die Möglichkeit eine in Europa ausgestorbene klassische Bordeaux Sorte jetzt exklusiv anbieten zu können sahen einige Chilenische Weingüter als große Chance an, und konzentrierten sich darauf mit Hilfe von Barriquelagerung raffinierte Weine aus den Carmenere Trauben zu vinifizieren. Schon bald wurden die Anstrengungen in Sachen Carmenere durch erste Preise belohnt. Heute sollen gar 30% dieser Weine zum qualitativ hochwertigen Segment gehören.
