Some of you know me from my rider exercise videos. Well, I'm not perfect and I have a problem:I can't feel my lower legs when I canter. Everything is fine from the knee up, but my lower legs seem to lead their own life. I've been working on this problem for quite some time now with my teacher, however, we don't seem to make progress and I can't maintain the feeling for more than a few strides.That is why I posted a topic on the Dutch discussion Forum Bokt.nl, with videos and an explaination of the problem. I got different responses, so I took my horse, my camera and my boyfriend (thanks for filming Roy, I know it was cold), and tried them out.Look at the reactions of my horse as I try different things: His mouth, his tail, his carriage etc. I editted my reactions in the movie. I was actually shocked to see my horse like that. I am really botering him and that is why I need a solution. Any tips on this issue are welcome, however, I don't appriciate comments as 'bad riding' etc. I am trying to improve this. I hope you can learn something from this video.23 December 2008Today I got help from a Cesar Therapist. She discovered that I am a bit crooked myself (no surprises there): I had a little twist in my body to the left, but this was quickly fixed.More serious is the fact that I lift up my right leg, block in my hip joint and rotate both my legs inward from my him. Therefore, my balance comes from my knees, in stead of my pelvis. This results in unbalance in the lower leg.So we did some exercises to loosen up my hip joint. My left was easily fixed, but the therapist suspected a blocade in my right SI joint (where your pelvic and spine connect). Once she got me to relax my right leg and make it long, just like my left leg, I started feeling at that spot. In the end it hurted just as bad as my left (as before I usually only had pain in my left SI). This means that at least I got some symetry back.The inward rotation of my hip joint is the reason why putting the stirrups shorter didn't help and why riding without saddle or stirrups wouldn't help: this will cause me to take the balance in my knees again, lift both my legs (as you see in my freestyle riding), and lock the hip joint further. This has been a real interesting experience and although I have a lot of muscle pain now, I am glad this person helped me: Lonnie, thanks a lot!She will continue to work with me and I possibly will write my thesis on this subject :) (which would be awesome!)look forward to my next video. I can't remember the names for my life except that the rider's name was Lindsay(sp?). If you know, tell me so I can put them up :P -Day 1 Course- Left lead canter down the side and over the pole without jumping the pole. Circle around the cone to set up for the jump. ...Jump. Halt in front of the barrels. Back around the barrels without touching them. Canter a large circle from the back of the barrels, inbetween the pole and the jump, to the sidepass poles, all while holding a sword with a ball in the cup on top. Not supposed to drop the ball. Halt at the sidepass poles. Sidepass the poles. Catch the hanging ring with the lance (ring jousting). Canter to the finish line and halt. -Finals Course- Canter a small circle to the left then extend the canter and make the circle bigger. Change lead in the middle (they had a choice of simple or flying change).Extended canter large circle on the other side, then collect and canter a small circle. Balanced halt at the starting point. Turn on the haunches 2x around. Leg yield through the cones; cones were a triangle formation. Sidepass over the barrel. Buster is a 2 year old Arab Cross. In this video, he is trotting and cantering over jumps. The way we taught him to trot in hand was we started to run back towards his pen from the arena. Since he wanted to get back to his pen, when he saw us running, he started to run too. When he started to trot, we clicked and treated. It only took about 3 clicks before recognized a cluck as the cue to trot and would start right into it.Buster was last sat on in April. Now we're in August, 3+ months later, and when we pulled him out of the pasture, he was as awesome as if he had just been ridden yesterday. Buster is a smart, honest, easy horse with a ton of play drive. Les brought him into the ring and started to jog in hand with him, then began jogging over jumps. Buster offered the canter when his life came up because he was jumping. Les clicked him for the canter one time, started to gallop instead of run, and Buster recognized Les' galloping as the cue to canter. In less than 5 minutes, he learned to canter from a halt just by copying Les. He also performed just as well with Kali when Les gave Buster to her.Even though Buster had just had all that fun cantering and jumping, and there were 3 other horses in the arena, when Kali asked Buster to play the Chair Game, he immediately settled in. Kali used her hand as a target to show Buster where to position his nose so that his back would be in the right place for Kali to get on. Kali clicked and treated Buster for lining up.The last time Buster was sat on was during one on one time with Kali in the round pen back in April. In this video, he let's Kali ride him, not only after he was running around playing hard, but with no warm up, with 3 other horses in the ring, during a thunderstorm. Horses like this are few and far between, but Kali and Buster owe a lot of their success to clicker training. Nothing makes training easier for a horse to retain then a click and a treat.Initially, Kali asks Buster to line up to the mounting block, but she builds up from there to rubbing Buster with her leg, to laying over his back, to laying down the middle of his back with her feet hanging off the tail, to kneeling on him, and finally to getting on from both sides and straddling him. She also gets on him both from the ground and from a mounting block. Buster does awesome with each part of the process, staying calm and enthusiastic the whole time. Today we had some pretty simple goals: to remain on the rail; to complete at least one full lap around the ring at the canter; and to work on bending in the corners. We had a little bump in the road, but overall it was a great day. You can actually watch the progress happening when he's on the left lead: the first round we work on just picking up the lead and not bucking; the next round we attempt to continue the canter, but cut the far corner drastically; the final lap he continues to canter but stays on the rail. Me riding our vaulting horse Goldie bareback (i.e. no saddle!). Riding Goldie bareback is perhaps my second most favorite thing only to vaulting and revving my Porsche feverrishly to 6500rpms in 2nd (yes, it's second to both of those! If that's not possible then now it is.)Goldie is an awesome 17.2h Palomino Belgian mare that was the primary horse I vaulted on in my club until we got our new guy. Goldie is a good trot horse, but not too great as a canter horse, which posed a problem as I moved up and she didn't. Her canter is not well balanced. She is coming along, though (notice the short stints of canter). I like to depart her from a turn on the haunches and stop before she gets too unbalanced. 2nd ride on Danny with Volker Brommann. A lot was learned in two days that I wish I could squash on to two short videos, but I just picked a few parts. For some reason I didn't get much canter in this one. No reason really, just happened and the video is plenty long enough to put you to sleep. It is also unfortunately really dark. I did my best to lighten it, but it isn't the best light quality, hopefully it is still veiwable.We worked a little more on half passes and those came out a little better. Of course in the canter he had to change (miss beat, not a perfect flying change he is still learning those too). I don't want anyone to worry about us rewarding him for it. He is learning them and he is already balanced in the counter-canter, he is just aiming to please.There was a bit more half-steps/piaffe work. He is doing so very well and really wants to do it.As mentioned in the previous video neither me or my horse are perfect. We have plenty to learn and enjoy doing so.
