Google Tech TalksNovember, 15 2007ABSTRACTNeurocomputational models provide fundamental insights towardsunderstanding the human brain circuits for learning new associationsand organizing our world into appropriate categories. In this talk Iwill review the information-processing functions of four interactingbrain systems for learning and categorization: (1) the basal ganglia which incrementally adjusts choice behaviors using environmentalfeedback about the consequences of our actions,(2) the hippocampus which supports learning in other brain regions through the creation ofnew stimulus representations (and, hence, new similarityrelationships) that reflect important statistical regularities in theenvironment,(3) the medial septum which works in a feedback-loop withthe hippocampus, using novelty-detection to alter the rate at whichstimulus representations are updated through experience,(4) the frontal lobes which provide for selective attention and executivecontrol of learning and memory. The computational models to be described have been evaluated through a variety of empiricalmethodoligies including human functional brain imaging, studies ofpatients with localized brain damage due to injury or early-stageneurodegenerative diseases, behavioral genetic studies ofnaturally-occuring individual variability, as well as comparativelesion and genetic studies with rodents. Although the arguements advanced by these scientists tends to supplement the neurological approach to subjectivity, it might do well to recall Lacan's views on neurology. During a talk he gave to M.I.T. in the 1970s, Lacan was asked a question by Noam Chomsky on thought. In his reply, Lacan stated that he had seen enough E.E.G. readings to know that there was not a single thought in the brain (Rudinesco, 1997). These comments, which scandalized Lacan's audience, may be interpreted as an allusion to the overwriting of the real by the symbolic. Science takes the real as its object of study without attending to the veiling of the object by its representation. E.E.G. readings, for example, are representations, and for Lacan the representation, as in speech, is all that exists. The meaning of that which it refers to is invariably constructed within a chain of signifiers from which it is possible to hypostatize a concept only when the principle of metaphoricity at work in its meaning is obfuscated. This means that the speed of light has been slowed down from over one billion kilometres per hour to a speed of only one meter per second. The consequences of this fiction have been restricted to optical effects, and allows us to see special-relativistic effects not possible in everyday life. The first scene is a trip down a highway without any relativistic effects. Note the position and orientation of the structures in the desert.For the next trip, we enable relativistic aberration. As we accelerate, note that the angular compression creates an initial impression of backwards motion. As we pass the sign, it seems to rotate around. This can be viewed as a Terrell rotation, or as angular aberration keeping the sign in our field of view as we pass it. The back walls of the building are also visible, and extreme distortion is visible on all the objects. Note particularly the sky, steadily shrinking down to the vanishing point.We now enable Doppler shifting. Note that the red desert is blue-shifted ahead through the green and red, causing a rainbow effect. As the blue of the sky is further blue-shifted, it drains of colour. Google Tech TalksMay, 20 2008ABSTRACTThe auditory neural code must serve a wide range of tasks thatrequire great sensitivity in time and frequency and be effective over thediverse array of sounds present in natural acoustic environments. It hasbeen suggested (Barlow, 1961; Atick, 1992; Simoncelli & Olshausen, 2001;Laughlin & Sejnowski, 2003) that sensory systems might have evolved highlyefficient coding strategies to maximize the information conveyed to thebrain while minimizing the required energy and neural resources. In thistalk, I will show that, for natural sounds, the complete acoustic waveformcan be represented efficiently with a nonlinear model based on a populationspike code. In this model, idealized spikes encode the precise temporalpositions and magnitudes of underlying acoustic features. We find that whenthe features are optimized for coding either natural sounds or speech, theyshow striking similarities to time-domain cochlear filter estimates, have afrequency-bandwidth dependence similar to that of auditory nerve fibers, andyield significantly greater coding efficiency than conventional signalrepresentations. These results indicate that the auditory code mightapproach an information theoretic optimum and that the acoustic structure ofspeech might be adapted to the coding capacity of the mammalian auditorysystem.Speaker: Vivienne MingVivienne Ming was born in 1971 in Pasadena, CA.
