My new Haven New Haven "Pumpkins"
The cliffs at Newhaven when the wind and tide are right make for a really great place to fly. The rhythm of waves upon the rocky shoreline, the pale quality of the light, the scent of fresh seawater and the shared presence of seabirds (and even the odd bird of prey) work together to weave a kind of magic. I had high hopes of going all the way to Brighton, but it became apparent that the wind was slowly easing. By the time I got to the Saltdean Gap it was clear I simply didn't have the height, even after a few beats along the cliff face, which did give me a bit of lift ...... but not enough and I wasn't going to chance it. The digital helmet cam also decided it was time to stop filming, so the movie ends abruptly just before the Gap. I made it back, but it got increasingly scratchy towards the end when I landed on the pebble beach near the car. Some didn't and the boulders claimed a broken leg of one unlucky pg pilot - I'm not sure how it happened. The line between serenity and harsh reality can be stark. But serene it was on this flight and it more than compensated for a gridlocked motorway on the way home. A Dreamy Hazy Day...
