President Al-Bashir launches major wheat harvest campaign in Gezira SchemePresident of the Republic Field Marshal Omer Al-Bashir has announced that the executive programme for the development of agriculture targets all agricultural sectors in the country in a view to increasing productivity and realizing the goals of the state to secure food for all the people of Sudan. President Al-Bashir was addressing a huge mass rally at Al-Managil Locality Wednesday on the occasion of launching the major campaign for wheat harvest in Gezira Scheme. President Al-Bashir pledged that the state would develop the Gezira Scheme and provide the basic services of water, health, education and housing to the farmers. The President pointed out that the Gezira Scheme Act represents real start for reform in the scheme. The federal Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Prof. Al-Zubair Bashir Taha, on his part, announced that the state has provided a sum of 2.5 billion Sudanese pounds for financing besides mechanization and irrigation services and all production inputs in affirmation of the great importance accorded by the government to the development of the agricultural sector and realization of comprehensive development all over Sudan. Wali (governor) of Gezira State Gen. Abdel-Rahman Siralkhatim, on his part, said the abundant wheat production is a message to the whole world that Sudan is a food basket. Egypt 2007 - National Ferry (local ferry), from the West Bank (el-Gezira) to Luxor, there and back (18 December 2007).You can go between the East and West Banks by road, but this involves a huge 20km diversion via a bridge to the south of Luxor. A ferry is much easier, quicker and cheaper. The 'National Ferry' (local ferry) runs all day and night. Locals pay 25 piastres each way, Tourists pay LE1. You pay someone at a desk near the beginning of the gangplank. The National ferry leaves from a pier almost opposite the northern end of Luxor Temple. Military regimes favoring Islamic-oriented governments have dominated national politics since independence from the UK in 1956. Sudan was embroiled in two prolonged civil wars during most of the remainder of the 20th century. These conflicts were rooted in northern economic, political, and social domination of largely non-Muslim, non-Arab southern Sudanese. The first civil war ended in 1972 but broke out again in 1983. The second war and famine-related effects resulted in more than 4 million people displaced and, according to rebel estimates, more than 2 million deaths over a period of two decades.
