David Dharrapuy is a 37 year old yirdaki player. He was born at Milingimbi and currently resides in Ramingining's outstation Nangalala, his mother's land.He is Ramingining community's main ceremonial yirdaki player. He plays yirdaki for the Gupapuyngu, Djambarrpuyngu, Liyagalawumirr, Mildjingi, Ganalbingu, Murrungun, Marrangu, and Manharrngu clans. When families visit from other communities (Yirrkala, Galiwin'ku, Milingimbi, Gapuwiyak, etc.) for ceremony, Dharrapuy is often called upon to play yirdaki for them if they do not have their own yirdaki player.His father was Johnny Bonguwuy (deceased), a respected Gupapuyngu artist and ceremonial singer (he was field recorded by Alice Moyle at Milingimbi in the 1960s). Dharrapuy's mother Belinda Milngurr is from the Manharrngu clan, whose father was Burritjnga (deceased), a brother of famed 'Dollar Note' artist David Malangi.Dharrapuy's ma:ri is Balmbi, waku is Gamalangga, yapa is Gamal.He started learning yirdaki at around 10 years of age on a plastic pipe. The finer points of yirdaki playing were passed on by Peter Walarri, who himself learnt from his father George Darringguwuy.He learnt yirdaki first before becoming a manikaymirri (ceremonial singer), and is now also a recognised dalkarramirri (ritual specialist) having been given the role by ceremonial leader Joe Djembangu and brother Tommy Yumunungbi.The name 'Dharrapuy' comes from the word 'Dharra' which is the bark of the stringybark tree. This has been the personal yirdaki of Timothy Litalita #1 Ganambarr of Galiwin'ku, Elcho Island. It has been used in numerous ceremonies in eastern Arnhem Land and has accompanied Litalita on his travels to Maningrida, Milingimbi, Ramingining, Lake Evella, and the Gove region for ceremonial use. Despite heavy use over a number of years, the instrument has been well looked-after and remains in prime playing condition.Litalita is a Ngaymil clansman who is one of Elcho Island's regular ceremonial yirdaki players. He has performed regularly in dhapi' (initiation) and bapurru (funeral) ceremonies on the island, and has also been a member of Elcho's Ratjpa Dancers which has toured the USA, Canada and Japan showcasing traditional Yolngu dance and song.It is easy to see why this yirdaki has been Litalita's personal instrument. Weighing a mere 1.5 kg, it is light and easily transportable, yet displays sonic characteristics of heftier, larger instruments. The overtone note is especially noteworthy: strong, powerful with a lovely soft, feathery edge to it. Another remarkable thing about this yirdaki is that despite playing in the key of E fundamental, it has the pace of higher keyed instruments and can be pushed to extreme speeds, as demonstrated by the one and only Elijah Gunydjurruwuy!This yirdaki has been cared for during its life in communities. It has been made with diligence, as evidenced in the uniformly thin walls throughout.
